SIDS are home to a large portion of World biodiversity: they host most diverse and unique ecosystems in the world, are of strategic importance for migratory species and are home to and host high percentage of endemic species. Click here to see some interesting facts
Island biodiversity is fragile, under threats and exacerbated by unique SIDS’ structural and endogenous vulnerabilities and development challenges which are putting them on the forefront of multiple crises and undermining SIDS’ capacities to implement the Rio Conventions and the 2030 Agenda. Despite the challenges faced, SIDS have showed ways to transform their unique characteristics and challenges into opportunities in view to restore, protect and sustainably manage their nature-based assets. See how SIDS have been leading by example and been frontrunners in nature conservation.
Strategically supporting SIDS in transforming their challenges into opportunities and upscaling/replicating their ecosystem management efforts would be key to the success of the Global Biodiversity Framework implementation and to the acceleration of the 2030 Agenda.
