Collaboration between the GEF and the Coalition

At SIDS4, during the Blue & Green Islands Reception co-hosted by UNDP and Global Environment Facility, the Government of Belize🇧🇿 (co-lead of the SIDS Coalition for Nature ) just announced the planned collaboration between the SIDS Coalition for Nature & the GEF 8-funded Blue and Green Island Integrated Programme (GBI IP). This key collaboration has been facilitated by the SIDS Unit of United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs.

This promising partnership responds to the Coalition’s Call For Action made at Biodiversity COP15 in Montreal with UN DSG support. Three areas of cooperation will shape the strategic partnership between the Coalition and the GEF Program: 1/ Partnership Development coordination, including SIDS-SIDS cooperation; 2/ Strategic advocacy, and 3/ National-Regional implementation support to bridge knowledge and financing gaps for integrated nature action in SIDS.

Synergies between GEF-8 GBI IP ‘child’ projects and various Coalition’s initiatives will also be sought. This will be the case for the a.o. SIDS Nature-Climate Action Roadmap launched at COP28 or the SIDS Ecosystem Restoration Flagship (under the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration) announced at 2023 SDG Summit by the Coalition for example.
